Getting Over Yourself

January 11, 2019

Don’t start your intro with “I’m passionate about what I do.”

It’s important to be passionate about what you do. It makes life more fun and more profitable. However, being passionate isn’t the same as saying, “I’m passionate about what I do.”

I’m bringing this up because of the number of people I’ve heard say it, and the number of people who post this on their LinkedIn accounts. And it doesn’t work as a way to introduce yourself and your work.

Those words don’t paint pictures. They draw unflattering attention to you. And they don’t tell me anything about you or your work.

Why are you passionate? What makes you love what you do? Be specific. I could say, “I’m passionate about teaching public speaking.”Or, “I love to see people learn to be themselves in front of a group.” “I love the magic that happens when people quit focusing on themselves and connect with their audience.”

Be passionate. Do the work in a passionate way. Make things happen for your clients. But please don’t say, “I’m passionate about what I do as a way of introducing yourself.” Please.
