Getting Over Yourself

September 5, 2019

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? And how does that affect your speaking?

Many people think introverts aren’t good speakers. Actually, you might make the same case for extroverts. Because introvert or extrovert you can still be focusing on yourself, which just gets in the way.

My mentor, Jessica Somers Driver, said, “Shyness and egotism are off the same tree. Both are interest in self overbalancing interest in others.”

Introverts may have a hard time speaking because they’re worried about being the center of attention and of doing the wrong thing.

Extroverts may not be fully successful speaking because they love to be the center of attention and don’t really care if they do the wrong thing.

Since the purpose of speaking is to connect with an audience so you can make a point and enhance their lives in some way, either of those approaches misses the mark.

Better to stop identifying yourself as either and just rejoice in being a “vert” so you can concentrate on what you’re there for. When you do so, you don’t lose any of your best qualities or gifts, you just remove the ego so you can concentrate on helping the audience which lets those qualities shine through and move your audience forward.
